Song Lyrics found to provoke violent hostility

Now is preliminary evidence that, indeed, the music and lyrics touch the feelings of the people. A recent study commissioned by the Department of Social Services of Texas and Iowa State University found that songs with violent words manifest tend to increase aggression-related thoughts and emotions of people. The study was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology May 2009 Issue. It is a contradiction with the common notions that listening to music with violent lyrics brutal angry and could facilitate the breakdown of positive emotions and catharsis.

The research consisted of five real-life experiences with at least 500 university students as respondents. The lyrics of the songs lyrics were classified as violent and nonviolent. Seven songs with angry letters and seven songs with angry words of these artists were selected for testing. Student respondents were provided by various psychological tests to measure aggressive thoughts and feelings after listening to selected music with lyrics of songs sorted categories. There was also a task that participants were of categorization or classification of specific words are perceived as aggressive and definitions not aggressive.

Some even said that aggressive thoughts invited by the violent lyrics of a song can really influence individual perceptions of social interactions.

This study was able to test the possible precursors of aggression, a deviation from common notions that aggression is caused by the aggressive behavior itself. Song letters that have immediate and instantaneous effect on the thoughts and feelings of people. Authors recommend further studies on the topic because there is still a need for identify and quantify the long term and short-term effects of aggressive and violent lyrics.

Finally, researchers have concluded that violent lyrics and may actually contribute to the emergence of aggressive personalities in people, which indirectly create a more hostile social environment. In other words, when it comes of songs and content of music and words that really matter, especially when the composers and songwriters aim to create moods and specific behaviors of music listeners. Thus, parents should always monitor the type of music heard by their children.
